How to Set a Clip to Mute in CapCut (Mobile and Desktop)

You can quickly mute audio in CapCut. But the options and navigation are slightly different in the mobile and PC apps. We have covered both platforms with proper steps so you don't have to struggle anymore.

How to Mute a Clip in CapCut Mobile Application (iOS and Android)

This method only mutes the sound from the clip you choose. Other video clips, background music, and audio tracks stay the same.

  1. Open your project and tap the clip in the timeline to select it.

  1. Tap the checkmark or tap anywhere outside the panel to confirm and return to the timeline.

Note: If you do not see a Volume option in the toolbar, make sure you have tapped the clip first to select it. The toolbar updates based on what is currently selected.

How to Mute a Clip in CapCut on PC (Desktop)

The PC editor uses a panel-based layout instead of a bottom toolbar, so the steps look a little different.

  1. Open your project and click the clip in the timeline to select it.

  2. In the right-side Audio panel. Under the Basic tab, locate the Volume slider.

Muting a Clip vs. Reducing Volume: What’s the Difference?

Both approaches produce silence during playback, but they work differently under the hood:

  • Dragging the volume to 0 overwrites the level setting, so you will need to manually remember the original value if you want to restore it later.

  • Using a dedicated Mute toggle (where available) is non-destructive. CapCut preserves the original volume setting, and toggling mute off restores it instantly.

FAQs

Does muting a clip in CapCut also remove the background music?

No. Muting a clip only silences the audio embedded in that specific video clip. Background music, voiceovers, and any other audio tracks you have added to the project remain completely unaffected.

Can I mute multiple clips at once in CapCut?

CapCut does not currently offer a bulk-mute option. You need to select and mute each clip individually.

How do I unmute a clip I have already muted?

Select the muted clip, open Volume, and drag the slider back up to your preferred level. If your version of CapCut includes a mute toggle, simply tap or click it again to turn it off and restore the audio.

Conclusion

Muting a clip in CapCut mobile and desktop apps is pretty easy. You can simply turn down the volume using the slider. Or, hit the track mute option to automatically bring the volume level to zero. Once done, you can focus on adding background music or voiceover to make your videos interesting and engaging.
